Alibaba Group is China's largest E-commerce magnate, Ma Yun, chairman and chief executive officer of Alibaba Group, announced in Beijing that Alibaba and its financing partners plan to spend up to 1 trillion Yuan setting up a network of warehouses across the country to tap a growing appetite for online shopping. This project constitutes two stages.  In the first stage, 20 to 30 billion Yuan investment will be made over three to five years and will be aimed mainly at building warehouses and also supporting logistics firms. In terms of long term goal, Alibaba hopes to invest over 1 trillion Yuan with its financing partners to develop and boost logistics in China.

"Hopefully within 10 years' time, anyone placing an order online from anywhere in China will receive their goods within eight hours, allowing for the virtual urbanization of every village across China," Ma asserts that logistics industry is a significant part of E-commerce; however, China’s doesn’t have much experience in logistics which limit the speed and quality for the development of E-commerce.

Alibaba-owned “Alipay” and “Taobao”, the payment system and E-commerce platform, are the backbone and foundation for E-commerce in the future. Logistics platform that Alibaba Group has been attempting to build in the last few years is another important part of E-commerce. “The investment on logistics will help give clients some reassurance that the things they buy will not be damaged by a third party along the way, and will help improve client stickiness to the Alibaba platform," said Victor Yip, an analyst at UOB Kay Hian in Hong Kong.

Statistics show that national personal online shopping sales reached to 248.35 billion Yuan which accounting for 1.98% of retail sales of social commodities. In the same year, 10 million out of 20 million packages all over the country come from “Taobao”, a consumer-oriented shopping website occupies 75.2 percent market share. Logistics transport costs about 60% of the total logistic cost. The efficiency of logistics transport counts on the transport speed. Speeding up the logistics transport can reduce the inventory in transit and therefore to increase logistics companies’ profit margin.

With about 30 percent of China's 420 million strong Internet users shopping online, logistics is one of the biggest barriers to E-commerce. Alibaba executive vice president Ming Zeng said "All these bottlenecks (issues) are because e-commerce in China is growing too fast and exceeds the physical capacity of logistic companies...it's actually a great opportunity ". Taobao, which handled online transactions worth around 400 billion yuan ($60.77 billion) in 2010, will look to provide value added services in logistics, an Alibaba executive said. CEO Ma alleged that Taobao's daily orders could reach 20 million in 2012, up from 8 million currently. He also said: “Credit, payment and logistics are the success factors to E-commerce in last decade; in the next decade, we will focus more on system, logistics and data.”
